Review of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Hollywood and the Society of the Spectacle

The review argues that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood reveals how culture transforms people into images. Tarantino does not present the real historical events but replaces them with an emotionally satisfying version. Rick Dalton ceases to be a subject and becomes a representation, sustained even by the physical sacrifice of his stunt double, Cliff Booth. Bruce Lee appears as a caricature, Sharon Tate as an image consumed by the gaze, and Manson as a leader produced by collective desire. The film shows that, in cinema and in contemporary media culture, we do not live as authentic beings but as representations.
